This puts the automaker’s total number of issued recalls in 2014 at 34 covering nearly 15.9 million vehicles across North America, including 13.9 million in the U.S. Almost 90,000 of the vehicles recalled on Friday were sold in the United States.
According to Reuters, the recall, GM’s largest, covers “69,552 heavy-duty Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickup trucks from model years 2014 and 2015, as well as Chevy Tahoe and Suburban, and GMC Yukon SUVs from model year 2015.”
Yesterday, GM CEO Mary Barra announced the dismissal of 15 lower-level employees in the wake of an internal probe into the company’s 11 years handling of defective ignition switches, which lead to at least 13 fatalities. In a press conference following the announcement Barra said GM will compensate “everyone who has lost a loved one or suffered a serious injury.” She however, gave no details in terms of specific compensation figures.
Shares in the $59 billion company gained 1.61% on Friday to close at $36.55. GM is down 10.57% year-to-date.
